New Features:

Project Tab Crosswalk* Updates:

In the Projects tab: Build Settings, added a new option to the Android-Crosswalk section that lets you select between shared mode and embedded mode for the Crosswalk* runtime. See Choosing Crosswalk* Build Options: Shared or Embedded for information on choosing the correct option for your apps.

Couple of caution notes with Crosswalk shared-mode:

First, like the new system WebView in Android* 5.x, updates to Crosswalk may be downloaded automatically by the Google Play* services if there are newer versions available. You should test your app regularly with new versions of Crosswalk as they are released if you chose the shared mode option. In some cases, you might instead choose to stay with the embedded option.

Second, because this feature relies on the end-user’s device having Google Play installed, shared mode is not appropriate if you are distributing your app through other Android app stores.

App Designer Updates:

  Added support for Framework 7*.

Framework 7 is an Apple iOS*-themed framework that includes infinite scrolling, pull to refresh and a number of new touch based widgets.

Even though the framework is designed for iOS, you can build it into apps running on all other platforms as well.

Editor Updates:

JavaScript* code hinting is extended to support APIs documentation and display more information, such as parameters and return types.

Code hints definitions for App Security API v1.2.

Brackets* built-in editor is updated to version 1.3.

The Brackets extensions catalog is updated to support extension's new versions.

Game Asset Manager Updates:

There are added support for importing audio and video assets. This support includes a code-snippet generator that allows you to copy-paste the code needed to add the audio or vidwo asset to your app project.

Many audio and video formats can now be imported into Game Asset Manager, which can generate code snippets specific to the game engine for that project. To use audio and video formats on devices, the devices need to provide the needed CODECs. The supported audio file formats for previewing an asset in Game Asset Manager are .oga/.ogg and .wav, and the supported preview video format is .ogv. See theAudio and Video Asset Support in the Game Asset Manager document for more details.

App Security API Featured Plugin Update:

Updated to version 1.2.0

Intel introduces a new secure transport API that establishes a secure channel with backend to protect data integrity and confidentiality over the web without any crypto/key management effort from the developer.

Intel XDK API plugins are now available as Cordova plugins

The intel.xdk namespace plugins have been recast as Cordova plugins and can be found in the o1.org GitHub repo.
It is recommended that you use a "legacy" intel.xdk API only if there is no alternative in the form of a core Cordova or third-party plugin. Top 10 Android Home Screen Launchers

Monday, October 14, 2013 Unknown 2

I have always argued the fact that the Android surpass iOS because of the serious lack of customization options not found on the #iOSplatform. This is due to the lack of third-party #developers, as the iOS owners forbids aesthetic changes to their products. Today, I am going to highlight the fascinating customization one can do on the Android device with the home screen launchers.

Home screen launchers are third-party applications that install over your default/stock Android home screen, giving your device a different look and feel. They bring boundless customization options to the table and this is an app that no iOS user will ever be able to use on iPhones.

If you are apprehensive about taking the full leap into a totally unfamiliar territory, you need not worry, the non-free launchers offer free trials and free versions to get your feet wet. Therefore, you can try out some different options before deciding to buy one, choose a free option, or stick with the stock Android home screen. The only disadvantage to any of the free launchers is third-party ads.

See how to Disable ads on #AndroidApps

Top 10 Android launchers:

91 Launcher (free): Aside from the 91 built-in themes (hence the name) this launcher provides wallpapers, new page transitions, and quick drawer transitions. It has the typical widgets pre-installed like the clock and weather, but it also offers extended widget options like a flashlight and one-key garbage cleanup.

ADWLauncher EX ($3.00): Compatible with Android versions 1.6 through 4.1, ADWLauncherEX differs from its counterpart ADW.Launcher in that it has 10 different 3D app drawer styles, icon configuration, one-click save feature, and backup and restoration options should you need it. It has security features too. You can password-protect all apps on the Apps Drawer.

Everything Home (free): Do not be put off by the fact that Everything Home is still in beta: this is the freshest new face on the block. If you type in sushi, your phone will instantly display relevant locations, apps, and themes. This same seamless adaptation applies to everything, even James Bond.

Go Launcher EX (free): This Android launcher has been around since the beginning and is currently the
number one (1) choice of over 100+ million android users. Enjoy buttery screen transitions, with the 15 fascinating widgets, and the over 10,000 built-in theme customization options.

Apex Launcher Pro ($3.99): The unlimited drawer tab option is an in-house favorite, rising high above the stock Android one tab feature. Aside from its handy notification extension, Apex offers enhanced folder support like batch add and merging options as well as multiple built-in gesture triggers.

Buzz Launcher (free): One of the more stylish launchers on the list, Buzz Launcher’s biggest feature is the sharing, creation, and application of home screens. There are over 80,000 screens to choose from and one-touch upload for your own creations, and it is compatible with other customization apps.

Launcher 8 (free): Launcher 8 turns your Android home screen into the dynamic interface showcased on
Windows-powered devices. You can add the live tiles like its done in a Windows phone, but you can customize the default blue background by theming it woody style, or adding widgets as tiles.

Next Launcher 3D ($15.99): The philosophy behind this launcher is to ditch the 2D. Aside from being one of the most heavily customizable options on the list, the 3D effects and dazzling screen switches are mind-blowing. Combine different themes to suit your fancy and fully customize all app icons to master your new home screen.

Nova Launcher Prime ($4.00): Nova remains one of the most productive launchers on the list. It hits on all
the aforementioned features, like themes, widgets, and transitions, but it excels in the world of organization. The launcher is performance driven to reduce lag, and it features clutter removal, drawer groups, and a top-notch notification extension.

Smart Launcher Pro ($3.99): Elegantly simple, Smart Launcher Pro is a minimalist interface which allows
users to launch any application with only a few keys. Do not confuse minimalist with under-featured, though.
Smart Launcher has everything you need plus insanely smooth screen transitions and quick search functions.

These are just a list of the Top Ten Launchers. Got any suggestions? Drop them in the comment box below.

Android and iPhone Not Rolling Out This Week

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Unknown 2

BlackBerry's messenger app for Android and #BBMiPhone will not roll out this week as the company struggles to block an unreleased version of the #AndroidBBMapp that affected its system.

The smartphone maker said Saturday it had paused the global rollout of Android and iPhone versions of its BBM app after the unreleased version of BBM for Android was leaked on numerous file-sharing sites.

"This older version resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways," wrote Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry, in a blog post on Monday. The version the company was planning to release on Saturday addressed the issues, but BlackBerry could not block users of the unreleased version if it went ahead with the launch, Bocking wrote.

As active users of the unreleased app neared 1 million, and were increasing, BlackBerry decided that the only way to address the issue was to pause the rollout for both Android and iPhone versions of the app. Besides modifying the system to completely block the unreleased version of the Android app when it goes live with the official BBM for Android app, the company also wants to reinforce its system to handle similar scenarios in future, Bocking wrote.

Michael Homnick

"This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week," he added.

BlackBerry said Saturday that customers who had already downloaded #BBM4All for iPhone will be able to continue to use the service, while the unreleased Android app would be disabled. The company said earlier this month that BBM, once exclusively available to users of BlackBerry phones, would start rolling out to iPhone and Android phone users worldwide from Saturday.

A consortium led by Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings offered Monday to acquire BlackBerry in a deal that values the company at US$4.7 billion. The proposal is backed by BlackBerry's board of directors.

The crisis in the rollout of the BBM for iPhone and Android is just one of many problems affecting the company which last week said it would take almost $1 billion in charges mainly on unsold BlackBerry Z10 handsets, and lay off around 4,500 staff and reduce the number of phone models it sells from six to four.

According to an Apple insider, this unofficial version of the app was downloaded 1.1 million times in just 8 hours, but caused the company issues it spent most of Saturday attempting to resolve. Excerpts below:

Luke Reimer wrote: "Prior to launching #BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the #BBMforAndroid app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.
Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it's ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability."

The iOS rollout, which began in New Zealand yesterday, has been paused as a result of the unofficial leak. According to TechRadar: The official Android release is still MIA, while the unofficial version has been disabled.

This unfortunate and unexpected situation is a big blow for BlackBerry, whose long-awaited roll-out of #BBM4All to other platforms was set to be a rare sunny moment for the water-loo ailing company.

has without a doubt done the boldest overhaul to its user interface, switching
from a skeuomorphic design that has become its identity from the get-go to flat

We’ve been playing and exploring this latest iOS ever since its first developer
seed was available in the iOS Dev Center. In the following post, we will be
looking at all the new features we’ve discovered.
